LAID-OFF
"In spite of widespread hardship, Herbert Hoover maintained that federal relief was not necessary. Farm prices dropped to record lows and bitter farmers tried to ward off foreclosers with pitchforks. By the dawn of the next decade, 4,340,000 Americans were out of work. More than eight million were on the street a year later. Laid-off workers agitated for drastic government remedies. More than 32,000 other businesses went bankrupt and at least 5,000 banks failed. Wretched men, including veterans, looked for work, hawked apples on sidewalks, dined in soup kitchens, passed the time in shantytowns dubbed "Hoovervilles," and some moved between them in railroad boxcars. It was a desperate time for families, starvation stalked the land, and a great drought ruined numerous farms, forcing mass migration."
During the Great Depression, the unemployment rate increased. The unemployment worsened, people had to turn to farming and mining as sources of livelihood. During this time, supporting family, paying rents, and feeding themselves were very unattainable. Marriages separating was not an option either, since the double income for the family was essential.
Shame was something that occurred through men who were laid off. If the children and wives were working instead of them, they feel like their status have fallen, and frankly quite emasculated. Most of the time, wived would be the one working, and making the income if men were unemployed. However, if the employer found out that the employee was married, the would get fired.
The Great Depression did end at different times across the globe, but the employment ratio went through the roof in way that the world would not forget in a hurry for other generations to come.
